Lowest U.S. average regular gasoline retail price heading into Labor Day weekend since 2004 (9/2/2020)

The U.S. average regular gasoline retail price as of the Monday before Labor Day weekend is $2.22 per gallon (gal) this year, the lowest level for this time of year since 2004 (Figure 1). The Labor Day holiday is typically the end of the summer driving season, the time when gasoline demand is usually greatest during the year. Because of responses to the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and efforts to mitigate its spread, however, monthly U.S. gasoline consumption (as measured by product supplied) has remained less than the previous five-year (2015-19) range since March.
